“A horror film turned feel-good.” Olivia Putnal, Premiere
“One sickening piece of garbage.” Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News
The Last House on the Left, a remake of Wes Craven’s 1972 first feature, follows the tradition of the Saw movies as another sadistic film that relies on horror clichés and gruesomeness rather than substance. After a group of sociopaths rape a teenage girl in an unnecessarily overdrawn, brutal scene, they just happen to arrive at the vacation home of the girl’s parents who invite them in during a storm. Once discovering their guests’ identities, we’re subjected to even more pointlessly graphic violence; but, without giving any thought to the moral repercussions of revenge, we’re reduced to sadists watching grisly acts that involve things as benign as a microwave.
