Beer Dinner Heads Up
Beer dinners have exploded in popularity over the last few years, and I’ve yet to be disappointed at the many that I’ve attended. The beer on tap is obviously a big factor in a beer dinner, but creativity deserves some kudos too. The latest beer dinner at Tess (2499 N. Bartlett Ave.) on Tuesday, June 10 is a great example. The restaurant is flying in fresh, live crawfish for its Abita Brewing crawfish boil and patio party. Six to eight Abita beers will be on hand to wash down crawfish, red bliss potatoes, corn on the cob, red beans and rice, cornbread and more. A beer dinner with a casual feel is something I can get behind. The Cajun fun starts at 5:30 p.m., and the cost is just $44. Call 414-964-8377 to make a reservation.

Another, more traditional, beer dinner that you really can’t miss takes place at Rumpus Room (1030 N. Water St.) on Wednesday, July 23. That may sound like a long time from now, but Lagunitas Brewing is coming to town, and I’m guessing the dinner will sell out. More details to come, but the five-course, five-beer menu should be a winner. Call 414-292-0100 to reserve a spot.


Barley Pop of the Week
I mentioned last week that I can be persuaded to drink fruit beers over the summer. For that second week in a row, a fruit beer deserves mention. Founders Rubaeus Raspberry Ale is another winner. The red hue in the glass gives away the fact that there’s a big, tart berry flavor to the brew. Tart melds with a fair amount of sweetness to make it easy to drink. I’m not sure if I could swig a lot of these on a hot day, but one or two are certainly refreshing.

Quick Taps
I’m headed to a preview of Ray’s Growler Gallery (8930 W. North Ave.) next week. I can’t wait.

This week’s specialty beer served during the Lakefront Brewery fish fry (Friday , 4-9:30 p.m.) is Eastside Dark brewed with oak chips soaked in Roaring Dan’s rum.

The Wine Cellar of Wisconsin (12910 W. Bluemound Rd.) removed what was a pretty good craft beer selection from its shelves. Apparently the wine business is going gangbusters so the store needed the room. It’s too bad to see the craft beer go, but good for the Wine Cellar.

I missed this when it came out, but thanks to, I found this intriguing article about the history of Founders KBS.


Events Brewing
Tuesday, June 3: Beer School at Comet Cafe (1947 N. Farwell Ave.) covers “Beers that Kick Ass”, a wide-ranging theme which means it could it be a long night. The cost is $20, and the event starts at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, June 6: If you’re a sour beer fan, then Stubby’s Gastrogrub and Beer Bar (2060 N. Humboldt Ave.) should be on your radar. Rare sour taps and bottles are the highlight of Sour Power, which starts at 6 p.m. (On Wednesday, June 11, Stubby’s also hosts Beer School where sours will be the focus. Cost is $30, and it’s expected to sell out. Call 414-763-6324 to reserve a spot.)

Saturday, June 7: Taste “Beers for Camping” (isn’t that any beer?) at Three Cellars (7133 S. 76th St.) from 1 to 4 p.m.

Saturday, June 7: By the time you read this, the Beer Barons’ World of Beer Festival might be sold out. If not, it runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Schwabenhof (N56 W14750 Silver Spring Rd.). Look for tickets here before you go.
