At The Vanguard (2659 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.), there’s sausage on the menu. Plus sausage. And also sausage. There are other things, too, like baked potato balls and deep-fried breaded pork belly. Can’t forget cocktails, bourbon and beer. Shay Linkus, head sausage man, has his regular menu of links – your basic brat, hot dog, and smoked sausage to the styled-up duck BLT and Jamaican lamb currywurst. Those ain’t nothing compared to the specials, which appear on a Packer game night or whenever Linkus feels like it. Recently, there was the deep-fried brat, wrapped in bacon, topped with Lakefront Riverwest Stein beer cheese, fried cheese curds and crispy sage. On Sundays, they’re also featuring a noodle soup (tonkatsu with pulled duck, bacon and longinisa sausage is a recent example). This Sunday, Shay is doing a red curry soup with spiced lamb.
