If you missed last Tuesday’s WebsterX, Bliss & Alice, and Soul Low show at Hotel Foster, well, don’t say we didn’t tell you so. We had the performance slotted as our show of the week, picked over an impressive slate of touring acts, like hypnotic indie-rockers Warpaint, emo progenies Braid, and Atlanta rapper Young Thug—though, he didn’t even show. The recognition wasn’t unwarranted. The three groups are responsible for some of the best music permeating the city’s music scene. Last year’s 16-song album Desparate Youth from WebsterX landed the heady, brooding rapper highly deserved praise. Bliss & Alice made his own mark this April with the outspoken debut mixtape, Poetry Volume One: The Shit Talker Tape. And Soul Low became one of the city’s most promising, young indie rock bands after 2013’s raucous, hook-laden debut UNEASY.
For those that missed out on that eclectic show, a short promo video from local filmmaker Cody LaPlant captures the night’s sweaty, energetic atmosphere and packed Hotel Foster crowd. “This is what matters,” WebsterX lays out during the video, which finds Soul Low playing his backing band at one point. “No more complaints about Milwaukee music. No more complaints about how there’s not enough people at people’s shows. That shit don’t mean a damn thing. We just want to do it. It’s evident tonight.” It’s hard not to get jazzed about that sort of mission statement, especially when the musician is putting out top-notch material.
