Thunder storms are predicted for this afternoon, but we’re hear to tell you this morning’s news isn’t much sunnier. What we’re reading:
- CNN.com is reporting that there are at least 51 people dead in Moore, Okla. as a result of yesterday’s two-mile wide tornado. Authorities anticipate as many as 40 more bodies will be included in that count.
- The headlines about Walker’s 2013-15 budget are certainly not stopping anytime soon. The Journal Sentinel is reporting that his plan to require able-bodied, childless adults receiving government-subsidized food stamps to attend “bare-bones” job training would reduce the number of those receiving food stamps by half.
- In one bullet point in the very same story, the Journal’s Jason Stein reports that the Joint Finance Committee will consider another Walker proposal: require state workers and retirees who smoke to pay an additional $50 for health care coverage.
- Gawker reports that Jann Wenner, who founded Rolling Stone, has appointed his son Gus, 22, to run RollingStone.com.
- Apple, “the nation’s most profitable tech company,” also employs some savvy accountants, who were able to save the company billions of dollars in taxes using a multinational chain of subsidiaries. The New York Times reports some senators are not happy about these exploited loopholes in the tax code. Congressional investigators found some $74 billion in taxes “shifted…from the reach of” the IRS between 2009 and 2012. Apple’s CEO will face lawmakers at a hearing scheduled for today.
- Based on data from the National Center for Health Statistics/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, WISN.com has created a cumbersome slideshow revealing (after 70 slides) which Wisconsin county has the most “excessive drinkers.” We’ll save you the time and tell you that Calumet ranked first with 37% claiming to consume more than four drinks (for women) or five drinks (for men) per day.
