Midnight Debauchery
East North Avenue on a Saturday night qualifies as entertainment. Some things I discovered on a recent evening:
1. That Sil’s (1801 E. North Ave.), the mini donut king of Milwaukee, offers the hard-to-resist “Wieners for the Wasted,” 10 p.m.-2:30 a.m. A hot dog with ketchup and mustard goes for 2 bucks. But that dog faces competition from…
2. The Mangia Mangia cart, which drew attention to its fetching patriotic stars-and-stripes motif as it loitered in front of Vitucci’s (1832 E. North Ave.). MM serves up regular and Chicago-style dogs, Johnsonville brats, Italian sausage, Italian beef and an Italian sausage/beef combo ($2.50-$6). But there’s also…
3. The redundantly named Mr. Senor’s (2335 N. Murray Ave.). The space is known for the unorthodox sculpture displayed outside the building, as well as the tacos and burritos offered through a walk-up window by a gentleman named Dude Llanas. The other night, my midnight repast consisted of three chorizo tacos (on thick flour tortillas) smothered with sour cream ($6). Don’t order the corn tortillas, which, filled with chicken, beef or whatever, fall apart in your hands.
Taking It to the Streets
Did you know that food trucks are taking over the world? It’s a known fact. Case in point: Take-Out Tuesday, a new lunch-time event starting today at Schlitz Park. Every Tuesday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., a cadre of local food vendors will set up in this 46-acre office complex, selling pizza to crêpes. Hungry? Today’s crew includes Tigerbite, Satellite Crepes, Fast Foodie, Pita Brothers and Streetza Pizza. Location: Cherry Street between RiverCenter Drive and Second Street, near Manpower’s headquarters.
Cold Swallow
So how’s this for an emphatically named business? Yo Mama! is speaking my language today. The Tosa business offers 10 flavors of frozen yogurt with up to 35 toppings. Although Simma’s cheesecake is also on the shelves, all is not cool and creamy here. Yo Mama! also carries pizzelles (Italian waffle cookies), caramel apples and Alterra coffee. (1349 Wauwatosa Ave., 414-988-5365) Hours: Mon-Sat 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sun 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
Forget All Your Troubles, Forget All Your Cares…
Still Downtown Dining it? Yep, just a few more days to eat those prix fixe meals at local restaurants ranging from Milwaukee ChopHouse to the new Ryan Braun’s Graffito, and close to 40 other Downtown joints. The last day to partake is Thursday, June 9. Once again, Downtown Dining Week offers $10 three-course lunches and $20 (or $30) three-course dinners. What are you doing on Thursday? Reading Dish on Dining, right? This twice-weekly column features new info and updates on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
