They say it’s a man’s world filled with women’s “stuff.” How true! Every time I go looking for a nice shirt or jacket for my husband I’m always shocked at what few boring choices they have. I also blame those boring choices on the fact that my husband nearly had a stroke when I came home one day with v-neck undershirts instead of his regular crew necks. They never see change as an option in the stores, so that means they can look the same FOREVER.
Well, mister, not today.
I thought I would start by easing into this world of change by introducing some of my favorite men’s hair products. First up: Shampoos and conditioners (they are NOT all created equal).
American Crew Classic Gray Shampoo
This is perfect for the man that has graying or white hair. Air pollutants and minerals in our water can build up on the hair and when your hair is light blonde, grey or white this results in a dingy brassy or yellow tinge. The Classic Gray Shampoo removes build up, leaving the hair vibrant and healthy looking. You can find American Crew at Target.
Bumble & bumble Sunday Shampoo
For the guy that loves his hair to feel squeaky clean, especially after a long day working in dirt and grime. Users beware: This is not an everyday shampoo, thus the name. It’s a clarifying treatment you should use only once a week that removes product build up, etc. You can find Bumble & bumble at Carenza salon and Sephora.
Redken For Men Go Clean
Perfect every day use shampoo for men. It has mint to invigorate the scalp and leave it feeling tingly fresh. Redken can be found at Target and Ulta.
Aveda Rosemary Mint
After shampooing hundreds of men, I noticed most of them favor a mint or tingly conditioner. Rosemary mint is a great light weight conditioner for ever day use that does not leave behind a greasy or waxy residue. Aveda can be found at any Aveda concept salon, as well as the Aveda store in Mayfair Mall.
Redken Smooth Down
For those men with unruly hair, Smooth Down with help tame those cowlicks and settle down curls and frizz. Found at Ulta.
Sorry, there are no gels here because I don’t like them in guy’s hair. At all.
Bumble & bumble Sumo Tech
My absolute FAVORITE styling product for men. It’s a medium hold wax that doesn’t look greasy or heavy. You open up the little tin and it just smells like a well-to-do MAN! You may have to teach him how to use it, though. Usually the first time I hand it over to a male client and tell them to “try it” they look at it like I look at a car engine. How to: Scoop a little pea size amount out, rub it between the palms until there are no chunks, and wipe hands through the hair pushing hair in the desired directions. Found at Carenza Salon and Sephora.
Moroccan Oil Hydrating Styling Cream
For the man that wears his hair a little longer with natural curl. Once he tries this you may never look at him the same again. I use this on myself for curly and straight styles, but it’s perfect to tame frizz and to add moisture and shine. It has enough hold to it to keep a shape. Beware: Use too much of this and you may feel a little heavy. A dime size amount will do. Rub through palms and place on damp hair mid-strand to ends.
Aveda Control Force
A firm hold hairspray for the guy that likes to spray and play his style (or new
style after this article, we hope). This product has a firm hold once dry, but when first sprayed you have a few moments to play around and get the style perfect. I like this because it doesn’t flake off or look wet.
So, do you think your man will try any of these products? Is there something I haven’t listed that you swear by and would like to share? Let me know!
