Everybody loves a good cookie. Maybe your favorite is an ooey-gooey chocolate chip cookie, fresh from the oven and washed down with a nice cold glass of milk. Or maybe it’s a classic Oreo cookie twisted apart so you can lick the filling right out. Or how about one of Grandma G’s Gluten Free Monster cookies, made with plenty of peanut butter, M&M’s and oatmeal?But, did you know that eating cookies during the month of May could make a big difference for kids with cancer?
It’s true. But, first I want to offer up some shocking statistics.
- Did you know that childhood cancers are the number one disease killer of children? — more than asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and pediatric AIDS combined?
- An average of 46 children per day are diagnosed with cancer totaling nearly 13,000 new cases per year.
- Even survivors of childhood cancer face a broad range of physical and psychological challenges imposed by the disease, and some will suffer its long-term effects for the rest of their lives.
Despite these sobering facts, there has not been a new drug developed specifically for pediatric cancer in 20 years.
If that seems appalling to you, I’d like to encourage you to mark your calendar for May 21st.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 
1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery, 901 W. Juneau Ave., Milwaukee.
The event will feature delicious baked goods (including gluten-free and vegan varieties) for purchase made by local food bloggers, bakers, and celebrity chefs. Attendees will also have the opportunity to bid on silent auction items donated by local businesses. Best Place will feature a fully stocked bar. And Yelp will be standing by to offer patrons the opportunity to win great prizes for answering Milwaukee trivia questions.
So, be a good cookie! Grab a friend and head down to Best Place.
