Though it’s predictable and unabashedly sappy, this romantic comedy will please fans of the genre because of its sweetness and optimism. In Letters to Juliet, Seyfried (Dear John) plays Sophie, an aspiring writer who travels to Italy with her inattentive fiance (Bernal). Upon arriving in the city where Juliet fell in love with Romeo, Sophie goes on a quest to help an elderly woman (Redgrave) find her one true love while maybe even finding her own (Egan). Though the romance between Seyfried and Egan is far from epic and the story is overly simplistic, Juliet pleasantly breezes by like the Italian scenery from the windows of the trio’s car and is buoyed by Seyfried and Redgrave’s delicate but passionate performances.
