I’m not one for making New Yea’rs resolutions – especially when it comes to style. So instead of resolving not to purchase another handbag this year or some other absurd gesture, I’ve decided to focus on fashion to look forward to in 2011.
Here are a few things I (and several Milwaukeeans) will undoubtedly embrace:

Wide-leg trouser
Tailored to the tee, wide-leg trousers are perfect for the office or as an alternative to a skirt or dress in most occasions. I’m planning on wearing a pair of light brown wool trousers to an upcoming bridal shower in February. To achieve a sophisticated, effortless look, shop for high-waist styles made with fabrics that drape. Wear these pants with a well-fitted top, tucked in for added polish.

Prima Ballerina
Spring 2011 will without a doubt be the season of the ballerina. Several runway collections (think Chanel) are showing off romantic looks, but with darker almost shredded-looking fabrics. If you’re trying the ballet-inspired look, I recommend thinking more tailored than tulle. If you need some inspiration, view Black Swan. Fashion label Rodarte did a phenomenal job designing the costumes for the performance sequences in the film.

Neutral-tone accessories
Sand and stone are the best inspiration for neutral tones this spring. Some may call these colors boring. I say they’re chic. You can match anything in your closet with neutral accessories. I’m obsessed with the patent leather cuffed pumps.

Go International for Target
I can’t resist high fashion on the cheap. If you concur, you’ll be just as thrilled come March – April when Target celebrates five years of the GO International designer collaboration by issuing a collection of dynamo dresses. Stores will be stocked with limited-edition dresses by past designers including Luella, Jovovich-Hawk, Rogan, Tucker, Zac Posen and more.

Animal prints
A little goes a long way when it comes to animal prints. When the colors are right, leopard and cheetah prints (no fur, please) seem to have a bit more staying power than zebra this season. You may find it hard to believe, but prints can be versatile. Jackets, blazers and blouses work well with black, brown, neutrals, red and orange tones. If you can’t commit to a large piece, shoes or a handbag will round out the look.

Historic Third Ward Association Gallery Night & Day
Held four times per year, this 2-day premier art event is the perfect opportunity to peruse locally made, one-of-a-kind fashions. On January 21 & 22, Lela Boutique will feature Wisconsin-based accessories designer Feutre Couture LLC as a part of Gallery Night & Day. Their scarves, necklaces and broaches are all statement making and constructed from 100 % eco-friendly wool felt. The company will showcase samples of their work from their Spring 2011 collection, which features looks they refer to as edgy, elegant or earthy. Absolutely inspiring and beautiful.
