“…has a warm sense of humor…” Kyle Smith, New York Post
“…unfunny, unoriginal, charmless…” Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News
Some tenderness lies within this uninspired coming-of-age tale based on former Simpson’s writer Larry Doyle’s book, but the dull, excessive high school clichés make Beth Cooper hard to love. After dorky valedictorian Denis (Rust) declares his unrequited love for the titular cheerleader (Panettiere) during his graduation speech, the two spend a witless and redundant night together partying, cow-tipping, drinking beer and dodging bullies. The film’s at its best when it subtly reveals Beth’s personality, thereby causing Denis to question if she’s the idealized girl he loves but, the story is more concerned with pandering for cheap laughs – like with Dennis’ annoying movie trivia-spouting pal – than it is character development and originality.
