How was your week? Man I hope it was better than mine. Not that it was horrific, it was just hectic. Lately I’ve had these kinds of days, weeks, months; where an hour seems like a second and a day flies by like an exhale. You’ve had these types of days, too? So I’m not alone with this? Good! Let’s make a point to remind one another that it’s September, okay? What? It’s November already!?!? Damn it!
In light of this week’s craziness, I thought I’d recount the importance of taking a moment to breathe.
A friend of mine gave a gift to me not all that long ago…at least it seems like not all that long ago. It was a rock. No not like those given to that round-headed kid every Halloween. This one had a word on it. A hand-written word scripted by my friend. It said BREATHE.
I keep it on the windowsill in my kitchen so I will see it every day. These seven little letters remind me that not only is it okay to take a moment and breathe, it’s necessary. I need this little reminder as I tend to be one of those types of people that push. My brain constantly tells me that while you can (fill in any verb), you can do more. Some call it type-A. I call it an exhausting state-of-being. Because although I’ve determined it’s a lost cause to wish I will wake up one morning and suddenly turn into one of those folks who seem to walk around without a care, I still believe it’s possible to retrain my brain to be a little more centered. So this rock was the perfect gift for me.
I wish I could take this rock with me wherever I go: in the meetings where I can’t seem to express my points effectively; in the heated arguments with my significant other (no, not to hurl at him); in the car when some yahoo cuts me off; and during my impatient moments. In each scenario, I could look down at that word, take a moment, and gain some perspective.
And this week I realized my Sunday Boyfriends are my rocks. I tend to seek them out more often when my world gets a bit crazy, for a diversion…for a moment to breathe. It’s my way of stepping out from my chaos to gain a different perspective. And I value all the ways my SBs help me achieve this balance in my life. Sometimes it’s just a matter of sharing a word-flower with my Facebook SB, sometimes it’s having lunch with my College SB or High School SB, sometimes it’s telling and hearing how much my West Coast SB and I miss each other, sometimes it’s getting how-life-really-works reminders from my East Coast SB, sometimes it’s being so proud to learn of my Gay SBs most recent accomplishments, and sometimes it’s hearing the good stuff going on in my Email SB’s world. When I have these moments with my Sunday Boyfriends, I always gain a new perspective on what’s really important and what really matters. They keep me grounded. Thanks so much, guys, for helping me breathe.
Here’s hoping you all take the time to breathe and find yourself a good rock (or two).
As always…stay comfy.
