In honor of today’s U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments in a case involving California’s ban on gay marriage, the Human Rights Campaign has created a simple, and now viral, image (at left) to promote its pro-same-sex marriage stance. This bold red square encasing a pink equal sign can be seen on social media accounts from Maryland’s Sen. Ben Cardin’s Twitter, the official Twitter account for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Milwaukee’s fitness “boutique” Drench Fitness’ Facebook account, and likely on your own Facebook newsfeed. Groupon even posted a video to its Facebook page of many of its staffers wearing red and pink to support the campaign.
According to its website, the Human Rights Campaign, which promotes equality for the LGBT community, claims to have 1.5 million members and corporate partners that include American Airlines, Microsoft, Citibank, Google and Coca Cola Company.
Starbucks’ CEO Howard Schultz recently made headlines for telling a shareholder during the company’s annual shareholders meeting that he could invest elsewhere if he didn’t like Starbucks’ support of a same-sex marriage bill (which passed) in the state of Washington.
Last December, the Human Rights Campaign gave Milwaukee a score of 85 out of 100 in its Municipal Equality Index, which scored the country’s largest municipalities on these six criteria: non-discrimination, relationship recognition, municipality as employer, municipality’s services and programs, municipality as law enforcement, and municipality’s relationship with LGBT community. While there were 11 cities that scored a perfect 100, Milwaukee still ranked high – its 85 sandwiched between Salt Lake City’s score of 87, and Kansas City’s score of 85.
