The moment I walked in to The Establishment salon in Shorewood, I immediately thought “cultured.” The place screamed style and ingenuity. Without a doubt, I knew right away this was the place to be to catch the latest trends in hair.
The Establishment is owned by the dynamic duo Howie Goldklang and Carly Flynn, who met in Los Angeles while Carly was working as a special effects makeup artist, and Howie was attending UCLA for screen writing. Now married, they own The Establishment in Shorewood as well as in a neighborhood dubbed “the trendiest” in Los Angeles – where it’s just another day to see Mad Men‘s Christina Hendricks on her morning walk.
Speaking of Mad Men, has the ever-popular series influenced mainstream color and cuts? The Establishment’s Stylist Suzanne, a stylist, says yes. “We do have more clients asking to go red. It’s more of a violet red though, instead of a coppery or orange red.”
What about color for men? Carly says there’s not much beyond grey blending. Men’s haircuts, however, are becoming more polished, with short sides and a long top with a defined part. “I’m even shaving a part in the hair so it’s more prominent,” Carly says.
A new color trend, which The Establishment calls the “benzel,” is a softer approach to the popular ombré technique. Instead of the majority of the hair fading from dark to light, select pieces are lightly painted with color to give a true sun-kissed look. Glorified blonde-orexics (Guilty!) are surprising everyone by trading their platinum locks for a light brunette or blonde ombré style.

Bold rainbow hair color is also making waves, as some stylists are attempting ombré and benzel techniques with pops of purple, red and my favorite, navy blue. Too scared to take the plunge and permanently color your hair a choice shade from the rainbow? Try a colored extension piece placed underneath a few layers to create the same bold effect.
And in a shocking twist, the “undercut” hairstyle has crashed back on the scene, with stars such as Miley Cyrus shocking us as by shaving off her long locks. It’s the updated bowl-cut that we never imagined would have a welcome return.
Another trend that has had women coming back weekly includes the blowout bar. Its main service is a blown out style that should last a few days. If you’re being tagged in Facebook photos on a daily basis, why not have fabulous hair? Would you consider making it part of your routine to have your hair regularly blown out? Perhaps a trip to The Establishment is the perfect place to give it a try.
