The Pfister finalists for the position of “Narrator,” listed in alphabetical order are:
Jill Drury, Catherine Jones, Ed Makowski, Matthew Prigge, Judith Steininger and Robert Verhein. Fine finalists all.
On October 14, the panelists meet again to view the finalists’ video interviews, and read their sample blogs. I’m proud to be a Wisconsinite (go Pack, go Brewers, go Badgers), but even prouder to be a part of a community of dedicated writers. For the past six months, Stacie Williams has been writing the Narrator blog. She’s a fun and lively navigator whose writing sparkles like the opulent ceiling in the Pfister Hotel lobby.
The Pfister has been part of my life for over three decades. Oh yes, that was me in the Way Back watching Joan Rivers perform in the Crown Room. And that was me telling Liza Minelli that the dress I wore for her Crown Room performance was purchased in good old Milwaukee. In the Way Back I dressed to the nines plus. It was exciting coming in from the western burb of Brookfield, and waiting in line to get into the Crown Room was in itself exciting. I’ve also had ‘tinis in Blu where the view embraces our city. Herb Kohl may be retiring, but his tuna sandwich (the Senator’s Sandwich) lives on in the café.
I ate one last week.
In many ways the Pfister remains the same as in my Way Back days, even though fashions have changed and beehive hairdos have come and gone and come again. People stroll around attached to hi-tech devices, the way of our world. Smoking has gone up in smoke, but you can still sneak one outside near the garage entrance, in a latticed space set aside for those who haven’t yet kicked-the-habit.
Despite the changes, the Pfister Hotel remains reasonably discrete. I like it like that.
