"For all the glasses there, for why should ever creature drink but I, Why, a man of morals, why?" Abraham Crowley, Anacreon II, drinking.
Ensconced in the middle of downtown Waukesha is a greater-Milwaukee jewel of a wine shop, one that joins the ranks in my book with Consumer Beverage Outlet in Hales Corners, Downer Wines, Ray’s, Sendik’s and Waterford Wines on Brady Street.
Recently, I started hyperventilating when I glimpsed the enticing and fetchingly displayed wine selection. Mon dieu! My fingers nervously twitched as I quickly snagged four fairly priced bottles for home.
Since its founding in 1960, the Greguska family has run this store with
its sister location at 51st and Oklahoma. I spent a good amount of time chatting with Mike Greguska and found him to be well-versed with the wine industry. Without question, he’s a hands-on operator of his busy store, much like Rick Laev at Ray’s.
Discount’s business is strongest in the $10-$30 price range with
mixed performances in evidence from all reds, whites and roses from France, Italy, Spain and California. The store’s most popular stars are Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Red Zinfandel and Syrah. Ever the trend-spotter, Mike sees strong future showings from Zinfandel, Syrah, Argentinean Malbecs, Spanish Cavas (great value) and both Prosecco plus Moscato from Italy (all-star summer fun!). Business is good, he said, but with the Greguska family’s involvement, it can only improve.
