The Fine Arts Quartet at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is probably better known internationally than in their own hometown. Heck, they’ve been globetrotting for more than half a century, bringing beautiful music to aficionados from Tokyo to Toronto.
In honor of its 65th anniversary, the Fine Arts Quartet is giving Milwaukee a bit of a gift – four free concerts this summer. Comprised of Ralph Evans and Efim Boico on violin, Nicolò Eugelmi on viola and cellist Wolfgang Laufer, the Quartet has recorded more than 200 works. Three of the ensemble members have been performing together for nearly 30 years and have produced more than 80 of the group’s 200-plus recordings. That’s a lot of music making!
For the Summer Evenings of Music series the dates and programs are:
Sunday, June 5
With guests: cellist Eric Kim and pianist Xiayin Wang
Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in G major, Op.77, No.1, Hob.III:81

Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Helen Bader Concert Hall at the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts (2419 E. Kenwood Blvd.). Pre-concert talks begin at 6:30 p.m., hosted by former Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra principal bassoonist Stephen Basson (no that’s not a joke, his last name is really Basson, almost exactly like the instrument he plays, but with a hard emphasis on the first “a”).
Although the tickets are free, space is limited, so reserve your spot by calling the UWM Box Office at (414) 229-4308.
Can’t get enough of the Fine Arts Quartet? Tickets for the 2011-12 season (four additional performances from September-March) will also be available through the UWM Box Office.
