The one wearing her husband’s sweatpants and a t-shirt circa 1995 that reads something like “Youth Volleyball Camp.” I never thought of gym-wear as an opportunity to make a statement – at least a fashionable one. I was wrong. Be it yoga, circuit training or spinning, the clothing options are limitless – and most of them are outright trendy. I admit it. I’m that girl at the gym.

I no longer have an excuse to enter the gym looking like I just rolled out of bed.

When it comes to dressing for the gym, there are a few rules to do it in style:

Let the clothes give you motivation. Part of the reason for going to the gym is to look better in tight clothes. So, I guess wearing them to the gym might give you the boost you need to take it to the next level. Pile up on the lycra, and that should be enough to kick it up a

notch. The best pants are mid-rise, with plenty of stretch to give you enough versatility so you can wear them running or when doing your power poses. Pair them with a lightweight hooded jacket (a rich aqua blue can be adapted to any season) and you’ll have no excuse not to take a jaunt along the Milwaukee lakefront before the snow flies.

Fit counts (In more ways than one.) Nothing will impede your workout more than ill-fitting attire. Plus, it’s just ugly. Tops, bottoms and what you wear underneath them should fit snuggly to give you a good range of motion while exercising. If you’re like me and need to slowly work into wearing lycra to the gym, try layering. Running shorts look fine when worn over running leggings. Pretty plaid or striped shorts are adorable layered or on their own.

Accessories are encouraged. I’ve never needed a reason to carry an oversized bag. I like having everything I could need for the day (and then some) at my fingertips. A small handbag is great for girl’s night out or a weekend shopping. The gym is not one of these situations. Lululemon athletica has several great nylon bags in bold, neon hues and deep fall jewel tones. You’ll have no trouble finding one that’s large enough to pack your yoga mat, running shoes and toiletries. And ditch the plastic water bottles. You can find durable aluminum ones in colorful patterns or with statements like “I heart yoga.”

At the end of your workout session, remember, a fit and healthy body will stand out more than what you put on it.
