The nightclub formally known as Eve got a recent makeover. Now called Apartment 720 (718 N. Milwaukee St.), it still presents the same upscale atmosphere. If you were familiar with the old Eve’s red interior and posh lower level though, you will not recognize the intense black and white designs covering the walls and bars, which now only occupy the upper level. A wall separating the dance floor from one of the bars was also torn down and replaced by a larger, square bar in the middle of the lounge.
At their VIP grand opening on Wednesday April 30, Apartment 720 hosted performances by DJ Skribble and Dave Navarro, of Jane’s Addiction and The Red Hot Chili Peppers fame. That was an interesting choice for the mostly hip-hop crowd that used to frequent this spot.
When I attended their public grand opening, I was surprised to find a line outside of the door. Not kosher with the typical Milwaukee scene, I adjusted my attitude and thought this might be more of a NYC type of place. Once I got inside, after talking with the bouncer, I was even more surprised at how empty it seemed. It was after midnight and no one was dancing, which is in my mind unacceptable at any type of nightclub. It was another 20 to 30 minutes before some people got let into the club, only to find it was not filled anywhere near capacity.
I know that Eve used to have problems with fights and security. If Apartment 720 wants to avoid the same issues, it should not keep clientele waiting outside to improve its false image of being a popular club. It has potential … just needs some readjustments.
