On Saturday, July, 30th, I went to an unusual barbecue with two friends. We met at the side yard of Amaranth Bakery between 33rd and 34th and Lisbon Ave. for a barbecue/picnic/music/art fest. The music was good, the enthusiasm of all present was catching and what does this have to do with Hunger? Well, B.J. was there cookin’ up a storm. I brought home ribs and turkey legs with his sweet/smoky/peppery sauce.
And besides we hunger for more than the food that fills our stomachs: We hunger for the food that fills our souls. And on Saturday, I left with my soul a little fuller than when I came.
Express Yourself empowers at-risk youth through immersion into the world of music, dance and visual arts, yielding lasting, life-changing results. Throughout the year, the youth and artists of Express Yourself spend time Express Yourself Milwaukee.
LIFTED GALLERY OPENING
Saturday July 30, 3-6 p.m.
3322 W Lisbon Avenue (vacant lot across from the EYM Studio)
LIFTED features twenty larger than life portraits and birds created collaboratively by the youth and staff of our 2011 studio summer camp. LIFTED explores the ways in which we elevate ourselves by our surrounding environment and the people around us. The gallery is open to the public and is a result of a partnership with the NIDC and the City of Milwaukee with support from MPS Partnership for the Arts, the Wisconsin Energy Foundation and KS Energy Services.
