The Milwaukee Admirals played the Chicago Wolves Saturday, March 3rd for a solid 6-0 win against the neighboring rivals. Shortly after the ice was vacated, multi-platinum classic-rock legend, Styx, took the stage for a post-game performance. “We’re gonna have ourselves a little rock show!” – Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitar). The house was visibly fuller than previous nights with a concert following the game, possibly due to the fact that the Admirals took on the Chicago Wolves, or more noticeably, the draw Styx has on, not only Wisconsinites, but also their hometown of Chicago right next door.
Styx had themselves a great rock show, shredding through hit after hit for the mostly middle-aged crowd. Famous for their albums in the late 70’s and 80’s, Styx is known for their classic-progressive rock sound, recognized by anyone interested in music during that era. Oddly enough the Chicago band seemed extremely happy to be playing for the moderately energetic Milwaukee crowd, even after a hefty defeat of their hometown team, the Chicago Wolves.
Years of experience and touring showed that Styx really knows how to put on a catchy show. Lots of interaction amongst the band members throughout the night was a relief to see and added some edge to the already fresh performance. Screaming guitars and thumping bass backing some throat vocals sealed the deal for Styx getting a positive reaction from some very loyal fans.
Lawrence Gowan (keyboards) was especially enjoyable to watch as he danced around on his elevated keyboard platform throughout the show. As he spun around on and threw down some tunes along with the rest of the band, he became one of the top entertainers of the night. Joined by the other members on the platform from time to time, Lawrence was one of the most attention grabbing keyboardists I’ve seen. Only adding on to Styx’ top notch effortless playing, the visual show brought the excitement up even further.
Fans seem to really love the idea of the Milwaukee Admirals hosting a post-game concert; it really helps with attendance, especially on weekend games. Hopefully the Admirals will welcome some more crowd drawing acts in the near future.
