1. Canary Girls by Jennifer Chiaverini 

OUT AUG. 8

In this novel from  a Wisconsin author, dropping Aug. 8, April Tipton builds World War I weaponry in a factory. The boss’ wife speaks up when the workers’ skin turns yellow.

2. Niche Book Bar  

SOFT OPENING AUG. 12

What started as a mobile bookstore on a bicycle will finally have a permanent brick-and-mortar location in Bronzeville (1937 N. MLK Dr.). The store’s “niche” is Black literature, as well as coffee, tea and baked goods. It opens its doors on Aug. 12.

3. Mitchell Street Arts 

GRAND OPENING AUG. 18

The South Side is getting a new makerspace (710 W. Historic Mitchell St.), which includes a woodshop, ceramics studio, photo dark room and more. It’ll also have a classroom, an artist-in-residence program and a performing arts space. The grand opening is Aug. 18.
