In 1892, when this photo was taken, Milwaukee children often served as beer runners for their hard-drinking elders. Called kesseljunges, a German term that translates roughly to “kettle kids,” these youngsters would tote pails of beer to workers during their lunch breaks or home to their families at dinner time. The galvanized buckets fell out of favor as bottled beer proliferated, but interest in craft brewing has once again made growlers (this time glass ones) a common sight at local taverns.
