Performance artist and photographer Carrie Schneider brings her “Reading Women” exhibition to the Haggerty Museum of Art.

This month, Marquette University’s Haggerty Museum of Art trains its curatorial gaze on representations of women in art. Performance artist and photographer Carrie Schneider individually photographed seated women reading works penned by women, intending the series to be a quiet reminder that ladies are far outnumbered when it comes to revered literature.

In her images, the subjects’ reading positions are as varied as the material, which includes everything from sheet music to Tea Obreht’s The Tiger’s Wife, with nary a Kindle in sight. All 100 images in “Reading Women” will be on display beginning Jan. 21, and they’re joined by three concurrent exhibits, including a study of female subjects in Japanese woodblock prints, and the symbolism of Joan of Arc. Schneider’s four-hour video installation of the same women reading will also be on display, their rhythmic breathing providing the soundtrack for what should be a stimulating visit.
