A shop that can set the scene -- out of history.

You travel to an old brick warehouse in Walker’s Point, are escorted through a loading dock and climb up a flight of rickety stairs, your hand trailing the wall for support. These stairs lead to the 1920s.

Satin settees and tiered wooden tables with intricate carvings grace the floor. Vintage china and color-tinted goblets adorn the shelves. You see chandeliers seemingly plucked from Milwaukee’s beer-baron mansions, and grand trunks that should house treasures in the movies. It is a trove of antique furnishings, vintage props and items born of simpler times.

It’s all been hand-picked from throughout the Midwest, and can be yours on your special day. This is Relics Vintage Rentals, which caters to weddings and special events, and owner Jan Oelke is there to fulfill wedding-day dreams.

“They have the final vision of their wedding-day look,” Oelke says of her clients, “but they don’t know how to get from point A to point B.” She makes visions into reality by helping them pick the perfect pieces, whether it’s just a few accessories or furnishings for the entire wedding. Relics can also deliver items on the day of the event, set them up, and then whisk them away. Because nobody wants to clean up right before the honeymoon.

But everyone wants a wedding to remember, and Relics stores centuries of memories.

‘Something Borrowed’ appears in Milwaukee Weddings, a brand new addition to the Milwaukee Magazine family.
