Your Wisconsin Glamping Guide

Is traditional camping a little too rustic for you? Glamping – a comparatively posh spin offering A-frames or yurts with real beds, electricity and plumbing – might make you a convert.

1. Bayfield County Rustic Yurts

BAYFIELD

This trio of yurts owned and operated by Bayfield County and bookable through Airbnb attracts guests from around the world. Each boasts an elevated deck and interior amenities like a woodstove, dining set and two bunkbeds with mattresses.

2. Camp Kettlewood

EAST TROY

The canvas platform tents at these three group sites were once used at this decommissioned Girl Scout camp and another down the road. They were completely overhauled with vintage furnishings and antique camping supplies by owners Simona and Jeremy Ebner, who opened the property in 2020.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Camp Wandawega

ELKHORN

The most secluded option at this otherwise quite rustic spot is a canvas cabin that sleeps up to five. Inside, you’ll find a tufted-leather sofa and antique, intricately carved bed frame. For diversions, you can spin vinyl on the record player and grill brats on the propane grill.

4. Coadys’ Point of View Resort

PHELPS

Naturally, the deck is lit by tiki torches at the Hawaiian yurt-style tent, while gangster-themed A-frame tents display historic photos of their namesakes (Capone, Dillinger, etc.). Guests can rent pontoon or fishing boats to cruise or fish North Twin Lake.

5. Smokey Hollow Campground

LODI

Each of four yurts boasts a fire pit and 6-foot deck and is close to a swimming pond. Amenities include bunk beds and various kitchen appliances. Don’t want to cook? Head to the kitchen for a family-style breakfast on weekends, a Friday fish fry and pina coladas.

6. WILD3R Center and Farms

MOUNT HOREB

Four sites on this 40-acre property feature a spacious bell tent, and wood already chopped and stacked for a fire pit. Sunset yoga and horseback riding are among the activities, plus you’re surrounded by hiking trails and blufftop views.

7. Sanctuary at Little Sand

BAYFIELD

Your safari tent may come with more rustic amenities (campfire, solar shower and composting toilet), but there’s also a plush mattress with linens, just like at home. And the site doesn’t have a cell signal or Wi-Fi, so it’s ideal for unplugging.

8. Edenwood Ranch & Preserve

WAUTOMA

Each tent boasts a bath and kitchen, so you can shower and cook in the modern age. Cozy up in a plush robe while the coffee’s percolating. Guests have access to the beach, a nearby zipline, hiking trails and an archery range.

Backyard Vacay

IF YOU LOVE THE IDEA of glamping but don’t want to leave the city – or even your own backyard – GlampMKE brings it all to you: a canvas bell tent, mattress outfitted with linens, rugs, lighting and other decor with various themes. They do all the arranging and pack it up after your camping experience wraps. glampmke.com
