“Art, Life, Legacy: Northern European Paintings in the Collection of Isabel and Alfred Bader”

SEPT. 29-JAN. 28, 2024 | MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM

Featuring masterpieces of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting – including works by Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Lievens – “Art, Life, Legacy: Northern European Paintings in the Collection of Isabel and Alfred Bader” is the only U.S. exhibition of the Baders’ exquisite collection. This major exhibition pays tribute to the extraordinary lives and generosity of the late Drs. Isabel and Alfred Bader, and illuminates the transformations that occurred across Dutch society during the Baroque period. The collection of 75 paintings presented in the exhibition was assembled while the Baders, longtime Milwaukee Art Museum patrons and supporters, were living in Milwaukee. They not only gave artworks to the Museum; they were formative in developing and ensuring the future of its European art program.

“Pause/Connect: Photography in the WAM Collection”

AUG. 11-NOV. 10 | WAREHOUSE ART MUSEUM

Photography’s uncanny ability to interrupt the passage of time is one of its most compelling hallmarks. The medium’s stilling of strange and familiar scenes allows thoughts and emotions to emerge that facilitate insight and understanding. To that end, this exhibition, curated by Lisa Hostetler, Ph.D., gathers a broad range of photographs, including works by Uta Barth, Margaret Bourke-White, Helen Levitt, Richard Rinaldi, and many others, primarily drawn from the museum’s collection. Arranged in thematic groups that encompass a variety of approaches, the pictures create vibrant conversations across history, geography and sensibility.

“50 Paintings”

NOV. 17-JUNE 23, 2024 | MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM

The landmark survey “50 Paintings” features works created within the last five years by 50 international artists, highlighting the artistic trends in practice today. With paintings by artists including Amy Sherald, Cinga Samson, GaHee Park, Nicole Eisenman, Cecily Brown and Peter Barrickman, the exhibition celebrates the medium’s continued relevance and range, inviting visitors to look closely and formulate their own assessments of trends in contemporary painting. The 50 works in the exhibition demonstrate myriad approaches to the medium. Painting – as a form, a language, a practice – is the focus, and the survey format underscores the many concepts and strategies present-day artists employ.
