You Can Get Holiday Cookies by the Pound at This Deli

The bakery program at Kurt Schulz Deli makes an array of treats, from decorated cutouts to butter spritz.

Kurt Schulz Deli in Brown Deer (8752 N. Deerwood Dr.) is where you go when you want a good, classic sandwich. (Some nostalgic ones, too – hello, Usinger’s braunschweiger!) Its perhaps lesser-known asset is its bakery program. At this time of year, the deli offers at least six kinds of holiday cookies ($16 a pound), from Mexican wedding cookies to butter spritz to decorated cutouts, all made by owner Brian Kennedy and his pastry chef daughter, Rachel. “I went to culinary school, too. I’m pretty darn good [at baking]. She just kicks my butt,” says Kennedy, who also offers two kinds of stollen, that traditional German Christmas bread – both with marzipan, one with rum-soaked raisins. They’re not loafing around.
