Aspiring Sheila Heti’s, take heed. The folks at indie publisher Vegetarian Alcoholic Press are hosting a writing competition at Comet Café (1947 N. Farwell Ave.) every Monday in May, dubbed Secret Words.
Be warned: this contest isn’t for those who need sober reflection. Participants congregate at 10 p.m. and ask the bartender for a secret word that serves as the writing prompt.
Submissions are read aloud and anonymously at midnight, a ritual with results that are “usually pretty funny,” says publisher Freddy LaForce. Submissions are voted on and weekly winners are published as a collection.
