Tigernite, Gloss Records' Halloween Spooktacular and more.

With tribute shows, costume contests and horror film screenings, the Milwaukee music scene really goes all out for Halloween weekend. Here are the seven best ways to enjoy the spooky holiday.

Gloss Records’ Halloween Spooktacular

Local record label Gloss Records celebrates the holiday with costume contests, raffles, drink specials and two nights of music. Friday night things kick off at Cactus Club with performances by Soul Low, Rio Turbo, Surgeons in Heat and Sex Scenes and the festivities continue onto Saturday at Riverwest Public House with sets by NO/NO, Soup Moat Piles and Moon Rats.

Night of covers at Linneman’s

Members of Midnight Reruns, Phylums, Slow Walker, Bad Wig, Midwives, Thriftones, Micronics and Sat. Nite Duets take a shot impersonating other bands at Linneman’s Saturday night Halloween Covers Show. Tributes include ELO, Weezer, AC/DC and Coasters.

Tigernite at Club Garibaldi

At January’s Local Coverage showcase, glam-rockers Tigernite went all in on the concept—dressing up as GGOOLLDD and delivering a rousing performance with the synth-pop group’s songs. Expect similar attention to detail for Tigernite’s Halloween-themed show on Saturday night at Club Garbaldi with Midwest Death Rattle and Sin Bad. The band has to be the odds-on favorites to win the costume contest.

Schoolboy Q and Joey Bada$$ at The Rave

If all the theatrics of Halloween isn’t your thing, then be sure to check out this rap show at The Rave on Saturday night, which could end up being the year’s best.

Nightmare on Center Street

Four music venues lining Center Street in Riverwest (The Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts, Club Timbuktu, High Dive and Company Brewing) open their doors for performances by Zed Kenzo, The Fatty Acids, Lorde Fred33, Awkward Terrible, Airo Kwil and more for the second annual Nightmare on Center Street festival. A certain early highlight is a special screening the 1915 silent film Alice in Wonderland scored by the DIY Chamber Music Presents at Company Brewing. The “dinner and a movie” showcase starts at 7 p.m. Single entry to the festival ranges from free to $10. A festival pass can be purchased in advance for $15. The full line-up is available here.

Peter Hook & The Light

Former Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook comes to Turner Hall on Saturday night to perform both defunct bands’ commercially successful compilation albums, each of which is entitled Substance.

Screening and live score of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

On Sunday at 8 p.m., Company Brewing again screens a silent movie with live musical accompaniment. This time the film is the Robert Wiene-directed, 1920 German expressionist flick The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, considered by Roger Ebert as “the first true horror film.” Steve Peplin and Brendan Demet will provide the score.

Stream of the Week

It’s quite the accomplishment to write and record one song a week for an entire year, an artistic tactic the lo-fi rock trio Lifetime Achievement Award undertook roughly 52 weeks ago. But that the end product hits much more than it misses—and even the misses are quite fun—is an even greater feat.
