This Wisconsin Town Drops a Giant Cheese on New Year’s Eve

Plymouth’s celebration is nacho average way to ring in the new year.

Every New Year’s Eve since 2007, a dairy-ing feat happens in Plymouth, the self-proclaimed Cheese Capital of the World 50 miles north of Milwaukee. As revelers look on, a giant faux wedge of cheese – Sartori BellaVitano, officially – is hoisted by a firetruck ladder, then gently lowered to the ground at the kid-friendly time of 10 p.m. The cheesy riff on Times Square’s famed ball drop makes total sense here; Plymouth is home to big-gun cheesemakers Sartori and Sargento, among others. And the city takes full advantage on the Eve, offering free hot cocoa, a bonfire, dancing and a champagne toast at midnight, two hours after the cheese has landed.
