Jim Morningstar Teaches Breathing Techniques That Can Help You Relax

Clinical psychologist Jim Morningstar joined Milwaukee Magazine Editor and Publisher Carole Nicksin for a livestream lunch Thursday.

Morningstar is the co-director of the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance, and he talked about the effect proper breathing can have on physical and mental health. 

“Improper breathing weakens and disharmonizes almost every major system and makes us more susceptible to chronic and acute diseases of all kinds,” Morningstar said. 

He said that poor breathing can contribute to depression, stress, respiratory illnesses, poor blood circulation and more.

Morningstar said an important step to achieve regulated breathing is simply being aware of your own breaths, which he said can have a centering effect on the body. 

Morningstar also demonstrated a few breathing techniques, one of which is called coherent breathing. He said coherent breathing consists of long slow breaths that can reduce stress and regulate blood pressure.

“Properly taught, breathwork keeps all of the body’s systems regulated,” Morningstar said.
