This Bites: Bay View’s New Southern-style Restaurant

Plus: a food-related controversy and some weekend things to do.

On this week’s This Bites (8 a.m. Fridays on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee), Tarik Moody and I get the party started with a dive into American cuisine with a Southern twist. That’s what the new Belli’s Bistro & Spirits is tackling, culinarily, in its storefront space (the old Pastiche) in Bay View. We talk about the weekly specials at Belli’s, including Soul Food Sunday and Tuesday Crab Boil.

Next up is the controversy brewing over chain restaurant Aloha Poke Co.’s (which has a location in the Third Ward) attempts to stop other businesses to stop using the words “Aloha” and “Poke” in their name, leading to charges of cultural appropriation.

In the department of things to do, there’s still time to get some State Fair foods consumed before the 2018 fest wraps up on Aug. 12. You don’t even have to go to State Fair to get in the spirit. This weekend only, Miller Time Pub & Grill is running two specials that smack of summer fair food. And looking ahead to next weekend, Pupusa Fest II ‒ celebrating the savory masa cakes of El Salvador ‒ takes place on Aug. 18 at Velobahn Coffee and Cycle (3618 W. Pierce St.).

Be sure to listen to the end of this segment, because the “Stay hungry and keep the malort cold” tagline is especially symphonic.
