The Best Things to Do in Milwaukee the Week of Sept. 23

The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Sept. 23

Doors Open, Milwaukee Film’s Dialogues Documentary Festival and more make the list.

1. Open Some Doors at Doors Open

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

Ya like doors? I love ’em. Opening them, closing them, knocking on them politely while I’m walking the block selling Possum Insurance (“Get covered or get sorry!”). As a big fan of doors, I very much enjoy Milwaukee’s annual Doors Open event, in which the city’s doors are thrown wide to the public. This year’s event is Sept. 28-29. Every year, dozens of buildings around the city open for tours, including many that are usually closed to the public. We wrote a roundup of recommended Doors Open visits, linked here, in which I recommended the three places that seem coolest to me – Jones Island, a manhole, and Villa Terrace – but if those aren’t your style there are many, many more places to check out.

2. Learn Something New at Milwaukee Film’s Dialogues Documentary Festival

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

This weekend is Milwaukee Film’s Dialogues Documentary Festival, and at it, they’re screening over 30 documentaries in four days. Earlier this month, we shared our picks for the must-see films at the festival. You can read that here, or you can check out the full lineup here. Also, I’m excited to be the moderator for the Q&A panel after the Shorts: Making a Splash program. If you’re interested in learning more about water conservation and water issues in our community, you should come!

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Go to the Brewers’ Last Regular Season Home Games

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS AND CULTURE EDITOR

Fall is officially upon us, both on the calendar and weather-wise as temperatures start to dip. Another signifier: the end of regular season baseball. And as my Kansas City Royals quite devastatingly slip out of the playoff picture, I’m hopping on the Brewers bandwagon. The team defied expectations this year by handily winning the division, and they’re rockin’ as they head into the postseason. (Just yesterday, they mounted a stunning eight-run(!) comeback.) The Brewers play their final regular season home games in what should be a good matchup against the New York Mets, who are looking to solidify their spot in the playoffs. You’ll catch me in the stands rooting for the Brew Crew and silently mourning my ‘Yals.

4. Make One-Pot Salmon and Shiitake Rice

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

I am in my rice period. Any kind of rice, you name it, I’m eating it. That was my entry into One Pot Salmon and Shiitake Rice. It’s not only rice, mind you. There’s quinoa, too. You put your short-grain rice (starchier and stickier than long-grain) and quinoa into a Dutch oven, add water, sake (or mirin) and a little soy; top with sliced shiitake mushrooms and some skinless salmon filets and let it all steam over medium-high heat. While it’s cooking, you make a dressing of toasted sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce and chopped scallions. You keep the heat on the One-Pot creation for little more than 15 minutes, and you don’t pop the lid. Not even for a quick peek. Then it sits, covered, for a bit. (I use a similar technique when I cook basmati rice.) After 20 minutes, you can lift the lid, add some sliced scallions and serve, drizzling the dressing you made over the top of each bowl. And yes, I’d recommend a bowl. This warm glob of rice, fish and mushrooms is total fall comfort. And if you’ve just a couple mouths to feed, there’s a lot of leftovers.
