1. See Candide at Skylight Music Theatre
BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR
Theater season is here once again, and I’m super excited to see Candide at Skylight Music Theatre to sort of kick it off. (I say “sort of” because I saw Dad’s Season Tickets at Sunset Playhouse in September, but my partner was in it – so alas, I did not write about it.) I did, however, write in our October issue about the nationally-renowned puppet designer, James Ortiz, who will be directing Candide. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing what Ortiz meant when he told me in our interview that some of the puppets are “puppets with a capital P” and others are not. Guess I’ll have to find out when I see it! Tickets are available on Skylight Music Theatre’s website, and the show runs Oct. 13-29.
2. Eat Pesto From Hundred Acre and Freshchef Meal Prep
ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR
Summer is over. I’m still trying to get that through my thick skull. But when I eat something like basil pesto, I’m back to one of those magical days with open windows, cutoff jean shorts and bare feet. (Was that really just a few weeks ago?) Upshot is I failed to make pesto this summer despite growing basil in my own urban garden. But I got my hands on some pesto that might be better than what I would have made. The pesto – from freshly harvested basil – is produced by Milwaukee urban hydroponic farm Hundred Acre and Freshchef Meal Prep, a local food delivery service that emphasizes clean eating. So far I’ve added the chunky, incredibly flavorful sauce to simple whole wheat spaghetti and as a replacement for red sauce on a pizza. So good. Am actively planning future applications. Buy it at Outpost Natural Foods and Go Grocer in the Third Ward.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!
3. Slurp Delicious Ramen at Kawa
ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR
On Thursday evening, your boy Funky Archie was out wandering the East Side. I had an hour to kill before the opening night screening of The League for Milwaukee Film’s Cultures & Communities Festival at the Oriental Theatre, so I decided to while away the time at the adjacent Crossroads Collective food hall. Upon entering, I saw Kawa Ramen & Sushi in the corner spot that once hosted Egg & Flour. “It’s ramen time, my little homies,” I whispered. A nearby couple shot me a weird look, so I grinned and gave them a thumbs up to show that I was totally normal. They quickly left. I ordered a bowl of Kawa’s tonkotsu ramen. Frankly, I’m a stranger to ramen that doesn’t come in a little packet. Even more frankly, I’m a stranger to ramen that is cooked. In college, I used to just munch on the noodle packs raw (I think the uncooked starch helped boost my super male vitality to an all-time high). So this tonkotsu stuff was a real revelation to me – it was savory and filling and absolutely delicious. I drained the entire bowl.
4. Walk the UWM Panther Prowl
BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR
I fully intended to run the UW-Milwaukee Alumni Association’s Panther Prowl this year when I signed up. Three of my friends were training for half marathons, and I thought to myself, if they can run 13 miles, I can run 3, right? Wrong. I haven’t run even once since I signed up, and I’m not afraid to admit that. But that isn’t stopping me from walking the Prowl. Being a UWM alum myself, I have fond memories of walking the Panther Prowl with my family and friends. It’s such a beautiful route through Lake Park and always at the perfect time of year to see the leaves change, enjoy the sun and feel refreshed by the crisp fall air. So if you’re like me and can’t dream of running this weekend, maybe just walk it and enjoy the view. It’s this Saturday at 10 a.m., and you can still sign up on UWM’s website.
5. Toast Miller High Life on its 120th Anniversary
CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR
Miller High Life is a great beer, one of this world’s many perfect beers. (I mean, to me.) It is simple, delicious, refreshing. It is perfectly branded, with its throwback clear bottle, Girl in the Moon logo and value price point. And this year, in honor of the Champagne of Beers’ 120th anniversary, the brewery is putting up a mural designed by renowned local painter Fred Kaems on the west side of the Miller High Life Theatre. A media event this week to reveal more – and talk about parent company Molson Coors’ “continued commitment Milwaukee” is not open to the public, but you’ll be hearing plenty about it starting Thursday and later as the mural begins to take shape. I don’t really need an extra reason to crack a High Life, but this week – this year – I have one.
