Editor’s Picks: Week of Jan. 8 | Milwaukee Magazine

The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Jan. 8

It’s a great week for trivia, ice skating, coffee and more.

1. Buy Space Time Coffee Beans

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

A few years ago I discovered the great micro coffee roaster Space Time when it operated the café inside the Dubbel Dutch Hotel. Space Time’s lavender latte was just killer! Space Time stopped operating the café at the Dubbel Dutch in 2022, turning its focus on wholesale but still making pop-up appearances at events like Milwaukee Makers Market. Recently owner Adam Sterr revealed that the company was really struggling and would be on an “indefinite” hiatus starting at the end of January. If this in fact happens, it will be a huge loss to everyone who loves great coffee and supports small local businesses. Do you crave good coffee? Buy some beans. I found a fair amount of Space Time 1-pound bags (certain varieties) at Beans and Barley last week, and I plan to stop back in there for more. (The medium-roast Guatemala Huehuetenago is my jam.) You can also buy his coffee on the Space Time website and, for the time being, at the Milwaukee Winter Farmers Market, held on Saturdays. Sterr has also been posting status updates on Space Time’s Facebook page.

2. Watch The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS & CULTURE EDITOR

I’m not ashamed to say I love reality television. Anyone who looks down upon those who watch Real Housewives will receive my pity. For I was once them: ignorant of the true delight of operatic drama that rivals the best in scripted television. I’m ever grateful for my partner, who showed me the light and invited me to watch The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City with her. The season finale, which aired last Thursday, is capital-T Television. Without spoiling the culmination of years of buildup, the episode had me shaken and thrilled in ways I haven’t felt since watching the final season of Succession. Forget about reality television naysayers – I was thoroughly entertained. Bravo, Bravo TV.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Prove Your Homies Are Fools and Charlatans at Gathering Place’s Trivia Night

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

A few weeks back, I went to Gathering Place Brewing on North Avenue in Tosa for their weekly Wednesday night trivia. It’s a nice little setup – a cozy bar, nice tables, just the right size crowd for a night of trivia, not too loud, not too quiet. I’ve been to quite a few trivia nights across the city, and this one proved worthy. The beer is quite good, and also, it’s right across from Cosmos Cafe where you can pick up delicious gyros to enjoy while you smack your enemies with knowledge.

Like always, I got pretty into the competition. “Come on, guys,” I screamed at my teammates. “How could you not know that Rob Kardashian was engaged to Blac Chyna? Take in some culture for once in your lives!”

So anyway, I’ve been kicked off yet another trivia team. If any local squads are looking for someone with encyclopedia knowledge of Nic Cage’s filmography, I’m your guy.

4. Ice Skate at Red Arrow Park

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

Slice of Ice at Red Arrow Park is officially open again for the season! I went over the weekend, and it was a blast. I was relieved to see they were still serving hot cocoa and a few concessions after the Starbucks left the pavilion. And with the snow coming up this week I bet it’ll be even more picturesque than it was when I went.

5. Go Out With Purpose

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

The post-holiday period is usually a time of just scraping by for restaurants, bars and taprooms. While it’s always a good idea to spend your dollars in the service industry intentionally – supporting businesses you want to keep around – it can be extra important in January and February, when many would-be customers are cutting back after spendy holidays, observing Dry January or working toward resolutions to eat healthier. I don’t mean to discourage any self-improvement, but instead encourage more thoughtful spending that maximizes impact on businesses that matter to you. One idea: Sahale Ale Works in Grafton (1505 Wisconsin Ave., Grafton), a comfortable taproom run by good people who make good beer.

6. Go to the 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

The 40th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration is on Jan. 15 at the Marcus Center. Milwaukee and Atlanta are the only cities that have held the event consistently since 1984. This year’s celebration will be free of charge, with schools from across the state bringing classes.
