Spend a Perfect Saturday: Take a Road Trip

Get away for the day.

Enjoy a Sheboygan Art Day

If you’re even moderately interested in art and haven’t visited the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Art Preserve since it opened five years ago, a Saturday afternoon is the perfect allotment of time to do it – and check out the rotating exhibitions of the JMKAC itself, too. It’s easy to lose yourself in the Art Preserve, with its stunning architecture and fascinating trove of immersive environments featuring outsider artists. Round out the day with a bite at chef Stefano Viglietti’s pizzeria, Il Ritrovo, and a pour at 3 Sheeps Brewing, one of Wisconsin’s best taprooms.

House-Peep in Lake Geneva

Start a day in Lake Geneva with coffee at The Porch (832 Geneva St.), a trendy little spot downtown. You’re only a couple blocks from the Public Library (918 W. Main St.). The striking  Prairie-style building in the center of town was designed by James Dresser, a Frank Lloyd Wright protégé. The main event is the Shore Path, which circles 26 miles around the water. Whether you want a short stroll or a longer hike, the path offers fantastic house-peeping of mansions built by scions of yesteryear – pick up a guidebook from the Visitor Information Center (201 Wrigley Dr.) before you head out to identify them. End the day with a stroll through the downtown’s boutique shops and a pit stop at Topsy Turvy (727 Geneva St.), a local brewery inside a former church.

See Fast Cars in Elkhart Lake

About an hour north of Milwaukee, Road America is the spot for fast cars and motorsports history. The historic 4-mile track takes advantage of the Kettle Moraine area’s rolling hills and plunging ravines. Events include NASCAR and IndyCar races, and if you have the urge to get behind the wheel yourself, check out the driving experiences that allow non-professionals to give the track a try. With its beautiful landscaping, the 640-acre property is perfect for picnicking and even camping.

Enter Another World at King Spa

King Spa, located in Niles, Illinois, is a massive Korean relaxation destination where the denizens are very comfortable with nudity – it’s a no-bathing-suit situation at King’s gender-separated pools. Nine different sauna rooms offer intense sensory experiences, from the kiln-like sweat stadium that is the Fire Sudatorium to the Amethyst Room, where the floor is akin to a ball pit full of cypress wood cubes. Walking back out into the sunlight (or moonlight – it’s open until 1 a.m.) feels like returning to reality after a journey to another land.
