Northern Chocolate Company Has Shuttered Its Storefront

But the King Drive confectionery will open by appointment and continue to produce those incredible Mint Meltaways.

Changes are afoot at the widely lauded Northern Chocolate Company (2036 N. Martin Luther King Dr., 414-372-1885). Owner Jim Fetzer, whose dreamy wares have appeared many times in Milwaukee Magazine – most recently in this roundup of local candies from the November 2016 issue –  has announced he is “semi-retired.”

Reached by phone today, the 65-year-old says he will continue to do corporate work and will be open “a few weekends a year” but not offer his full product line. Because “a man defines himself by what he sells,” Fetzer says he will continue to give life to his popular Mint Meltaways, and various other confections. On the day we talked, the chocolate man was making his coconut clusters.

While Fetzer is no longer keeping regular hours for the shop, Northern Chocolate is open by appointment. Read more about this incomparable candyman in “Bittersweet,” a feature that appeared in our April 2008 issue.
