Natural Selection

Natural Selection

We review Midnight Reruns’ new album, “Force of Nurture.”

Mere seconds into Midnight Reruns’ shambolic, power-pop-laden sophomore effort, singer Graham Hunt is trapped inside his own head – convinced a deadly disease is swiftly destroying his body – and he’s trying to break out. “I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die,” Hunt rambles behind a jangly guitar on “There’s an Animal Upstairs.” Then the pent-up tension sets off an explosion.

Force of Nurture, recorded in New York City with producer Tommy Stinson, builds on the urgent sense that this reckless youth can’t last forever.

Midnight Reruns opened for Stinson’s seminal band The Replacements for a sold-out reunion at the Rave earlier this year, and the parallels between the two are clear: On Force of Nurture, the band embodies that same restless spirit and shrewd songwriting chops.
