Mod Gen, the popular Third Ward store known for its unique selection of home and garden goods, will permanently close its doors in December, according to a social media post on Monday.
The business, which derives its name from “modern general” store, opened 25 years ago. It announced that its last day in operation will be Dec. 24.
“This will be our last holiday season with you. After twenty-five years it is time for us to retire and start a new chapter of life,” states the Instagram post signed by Mod Gen CEO Doug McDonald. “This journey has been filled with many successes and more than our fair share of challenges, and we are so grateful for the patronage and support of the greater Milwaukee community that made it possible. Thank You!”
The post goes on to state that the business will wind down operations with holiday sales and inventory liquidations.
Mod Gen has occupied a 2,500-square-foot store at 211 N. Broadway Street since 2016 after moving from a location on Capitol Drive in order to tap into the Downtown retail market. The business launched in Shorewood in 2001 as Garden Room before rebranding as Mod Gen, offering home and garden goods along with a wide selection of lush houseplants, books, ceramics, unique home décor, soaps and seasonal offerings.
Mod Gen is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, according to its website.
McDonald couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
