Milwaukee’s Newest Music Festival is Synth Fest MKE

Synth Fest MKE offers a unique line-up that uncovers the depth of Milwaukee’s electronic music scene. Plus: John Carpenter at the Pabst, the Stream of the Week, and our weekly preview of live shows in Milwaukee.

SynthFestA new festival gets underway this weekend. Similar to Milwaukee Psych Fest’s genre-specific showcase, the inaugural Synth Fest MKE celebrates all music synthesizer-based with four shows over two days. The festival features day sets starting at noon on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24 at Acme Records, each followed by a night set at Cactus Club starting at 8 p.m. There is no cover charge at Acme Records, 2341 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., (however, donations are accepted) and the price of admission to Cactus Club, 2496 S. Wentworth Ave., is $7 for one night or $12 for a weekend pass.

While many summer festivals tend to seek out the same local bands, Synth Fest MKE truly offers a unique line-up that uncovers the depth of Milwaukee’s electronic music scene. There are a few recognizable artists like Jon Mueller, Apollo Vermouth, adoptahighway and Thomas Wincek, but many of these names will be unfamiliar to those whom aren’t completely plugged in, which is an exciting prospect of musical adventure. Even though I may come away not liking most material, I’m thrilled by the concept that I may find a few new artists that I love. A good number of these musicians don’t play out that often, making this festival the perfect time to get an all-encompassing look at one distinct segment of Milwaukee music. The full line-up is available below:

Saturday, July 23

Acme Records, 12 p.m-6 p.m.

Cactus Club, 8 p.m.-12 a.m.

Sunday, July 24

Acme Records, 12 p.m-6 p.m.

Cactus Club, 8 p.m.-12 a.m.

John Carpenter Live Retrospective

Film score buffs will want to check out filmmaker and musician John Carpenter at the Pabst Theater on Monday, July 18. The cinematic visionary will pull from his indelible scores, like the tense Assault on Precinct 13 soundtrack and the ominous Halloween theme; he’ll also rely on material from his two stand-alone musical compositions entitled Lost Themes and Lost Themes II.

Stream of the Week

Feel the pull of electro-soul multi-instrumentalist/producer Thane on his three-song EP Gravity, which features contributions from Milwaukeeans Jamie Breiwick and Marxus. It’s an impressive opening shot and the newcomer won’t be waiting long to build off this success—a full-length, Topia, is tentatively scheduled for an August release, according to 88Nine Radio Milwaukee’s Tarik Moody.
