Milwaukee County is replacing its traditional July 3rd lakefront fireworks show with a drone display.
The county canceled last year’s July 3rd fireworks display due to a lack of sponsorship and the inability to cover the cost of the $350,000 show alone. The lakefront fireworks were also canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic and staffing shortages.
This year’s drone show, which will take place over McKinley Beach and along the Downtown Lake Michigan shoreline, will feature three waves of drones lasting about 14 minutes each, blending cutting-edge drone technology with an original synchronized soundtrack for a 45-minute performance overall. Viewers can expect images of Milwaukee’s most iconic landmarks and other patriotic and local themes, according to an announcement from County Executive David Crowly, Milwaukee County Parks and Milwaukee County Parks Foundation.

“Milwaukee County is at its best when we come together to create memorable, inclusive experiences for everyone,” Crowley said. “We’re proud to bring the community together for this first-of-its-kind drone show, highlighting not just our beautiful lakefront but the creativity and collaboration that make Milwaukee County so special.”
Milwaukee County Parks Foundation Executive Director Rebecca Stoner expressed gratitude for the partners who came forward to “reimagine a beloved community celebration in an innovative and inclusive way.”
“This drone show is an exciting and environmentally conscious way to celebrate our community,” Milwaukee County Parks Executive Director Guy Smith said. “Unlike traditional fireworks, drone shows reduce noise and air pollution while still delivering an unforgettable experience.”
Michael F. Hupy is presenting sponsor of the event.
“The July 3rd lakefront celebration is an important event for thousands of community members,” Hupy said. “I was committed to doing whatever it takes to bring it back this year.”
Roads near the event area may close just before and during the show, and the drone launch zone near the pier will be restricted.
