At Talking Walls, Jodi Lurie has created a design oasis. The wallpaper boutique and showroom in Brown Deer is fit for both homeowners and professional designers, with thousands of designs to choose from. We asked Jodi to share her expertise.
Why is wallpaper increasingly popular?
Wallpaper is a great way to make your space feel personal. A little bit goes a long way if it’s used intentionally. If you add the right paper to a powder room, a laundry room, a dining room, it lends personality to the space and makes it really feel like your own.
How do you help people find that “right” wallpaper?
We ask questions to get a sense of your style – colors you like and don’t, other pieces in your home that you especially like. Who will be using the room: kids, pets? Once we understand how your household works and your style preferences, we start pulling ideas.
Why is it important to talk to an expert before putting up wallpaper?
I can’t tell you how many times people come in and say, ‘Well, I went online and I bought this peel-and-stick paper. Now it’s stuck on my wall and I can’t get it down.’ The internet is a great place to start looking for ideas, but just because a wallpaper looks good on the internet doesn’t mean it will look good in your space. Scale is crucial. It’s important to have the help of an expert, to see the wallpaper in person and to know what you’re getting.
