The fourth episode features Marquise Mays, a renowned filmmaker, professor, and programmer living in Milwaukee. Mays’ work, films, and research, are an illustration of Black life on and off screen, relating to the experience of being Black in the Midwest. His work has gained national and international attention on various TV channels and film festivals. Mays also works as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

“Black people in this city love cinema because it was our first opportunity to see worlds outside of the worlds we were subjected to here,” says Mays in the video. “The sheer fact that they are in this room together at the same time going through the same things creates a form of community and comradery that can last a lifetime.”
