West Bend teenager Courtney Rummel has earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic snowboard team that will compete in the Beijing Games next month. Rummel, 18, is among a contingent of 26 snowboarders who will represent the United States. She will be making her Olympic debut and will compete in the slopestyle and big air competitions in China.

In slopestyle, snowboarders use rails and jumps to perform tricks that are scored by judges. In big air, riders perform one jump in which they attempt to incorporate their best trick to earn a top score.
West Bend West High School, from where Rummel graduated, posted congratulations on Twitter.

Rummel joins fellow Washington County resident Jordan Stolz in traveling to Beijing to compete in the Winter Olympics. Stolz, of Kewaskum, earned a spot on the Team USA speed skating team after winning the 500-meter and 1,000-meter races at the U.S. Olympic Long Track Trials at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee earlier this month. Stolz, 17, set Pettit Center track records in each event.
Rummel and Stolz are expected to travel to China this week to begin their Olympic journey.
Two other athletes with Milwaukee area ties landed spots on the U.S. women’s ice hockey team that will compete in Beijing. Alex Cavallini of Delafield and Brianna Decker of Dousman both were members of the 2018 squad that captured the gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Decker also played on the silver medal-winning team in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
Cavallini and Decker were teammates on the University of Wisconsin hockey team that captured the 2011 national championship.
