Thursday, June 30 is the opening of the Third Ward’s Kimpton Journeyman Hotel (310 E. Chicago St.). It’s also D-day for the hotel’s restaurant Tre Rivali and the rooftop bar-restaurant The Outsider.
Tre Rivali (entrance at 200 N. Broadway) – whose executive chef Heather Terhune is a former contestant on “Top Chef” and ran the kitchen at Chicago’s Sable Kitchen & Bar – features a contemporary American menu with Mediterranean influences. The European theme is carried over to the interior with a Spanish porcelain tile floor and Carrara marble. The main dining room includes a wood-fired oven (for the pizzas, among other things) and a large communal dining table.
Plates are separated into cicheti (snacks) and tapas ($5-$17), vegetables ($7-$10), fish & seafood ($12-$15), handmade pastas and pizzas ($15-$18) and large plates ($22-$29). Options include paella arancini; olive oil braised charred octopus; crispy pork belly carbonara; pappardelle with braised pork neck ragout and ricotta salata; grilled swordfish with creamy corn flan and curry roasted carrots; and Moroccan spiced lamb chops with tomato-cucumber fattoush. For the time being, the restaurant is serving just breakfast (weekdays 7-10 a.m.; weekends 8-11 a.m.) and dinner: Sun-Thurs 5-10 p.m.; Fri-Sat 5-11 p.m. Brunch and lunch service will start sometime this summer. For reservations, call 414-291-3974.
The 5,000-square-foot rooftop Outsider is an indoor/outdoor space featuring plush daybeds, fire pits and its own menu of shareable small plates. Hours: daily 4 p.m.-1 a.m. More hotel info here.
