Jazz in the Park Preview: Meet Mike Mangione & The Kin

A wonderful August evening spent listening to a local band while sipping on a cold beverage sounds pretty ideal.

Milwaukee Magazine is once again thrilled to be partnering with East Town’s annual event series: Jazz in the Park. Check back every week for a preview of the event’s feature band. See all of our Jazz in the Park previews here.

August 9: Mike Mangione & The Kin

Once again, Jazz in the Park will welcome another wonderful music group. Mike Mangione & The Kin are next to perform on Thursday, August 9, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cathedral Square Park.

For the majority of Marquette University alum Mike Mangione’s life, he collaborated with his guitarist brother Tom. But five years ago, they met another family duo, cellist Monique and violinist Chauntee Ross; since then it’s been musical magical harmony.

The group’s folk-rock-meets-Americana-meets-acoustic vibe easily differentiates it from other local groups. Their newest album, But I’ve Seen the Stars, electrifies listeners with passion, mystery and emotions (along with the musical notes themselves).

Although the group derives from original blues and folks music, they aren’t afraid to take their listeners down a different path. From heartfelt spiritual medleys to hopeful and despairing songs, Mike Mangione & The Kin definitely understand how to entertain and delight their audience.

Check out all of their music on their website, and if you like what you see, check out another show.
