How a Photographer Captured This Moody Bonfire Scene

The midwinter tradition is a sight to behold.

Every midwinter, when the ice thickens to about a foot, some of the residents of Madison’s east side gather on Lake Monona to bid a fiery adieu to their Christmas trees. One of those residents, photographer Oberon Jagodinski, was invited after noticing the tree stockpile at a neighbor’s house while walking his dog. The night of the bonfire, he captured this image with his Mavic 2 Pro drone as the glow of the burning trees cast shadows into the moody, colder tones beyond. “This was my first time having a bonfire on the lake with the Madison skyline in the background – an experience I will never forget,” he says.
