How a Local Photographer Snapped This Cascading Photo of Little Manitou Falls

Wisconsin photographer Nick Schroeter captured this shot in 2020 during a trip to northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

You have to wonder if Little Manitou Falls feels disrespected by its name. It’s the undercard in Pattison State Park, just south of Superior, to the 165-foot Big Manitou Falls, the highest waterfall in Wisconsin and the fourth-highest east of the Rockies.

But the twin cascades of Little Manitou hold their own as a spectacle, with the Black River dropping 31 feet into a pool at its feet. Menomonee Falls hobby photographer Nick Schroeter captured this shot of it in 2020 during a trip to photograph several waterfalls in northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. He recalls rushing this shot a bit in a race to reach Lake Superior by sunset.

“I spent about five to 10 minutes studying the landscape and area, and only took two or three photos,” he says. “This waterfall flows down a very rocky area into a small valley. I thought that framing the waterfall in as much rock as possible would help convey that.”
