Experimental Music Series MELT Features LUXI, Construct and More

Plus listen to rapper El-Shareef and producer Derelle Rideout’s “Matching Verts,” our stream of the week.

For the past five years, the electronic and experimental music series MELT has given a stage to introspective, obscure and oftentimes difficult-sounding music from local producers that don’t really fit on most Milwaukee bills. Its ambitious creators inhabit the darker corners and deeper abysses of sonic landscapes, which tends to sound quite alienating sandwiched between two power pop bands. But the MELT shows can often be revelatory and refreshing—an unburdened space of free-form spirit and discovery that’s unparalleled in the city.

The series recently returned from hiatus at the end of 2016 and is back to booking monthly showcases. Its latest addition happens on Saturday, January 28 at Quarter’s Rock ‘n Roll Palace and features dark techno producer Construct, a brand new trip hop project from Justin Jeffrey Richter called Piñata, UK-born producer and Milwaukee scene veteran Fortune, and MELT curator and DJ The Demix.

Rounding out the bill is the entrancing, ethereal producer LUXI, who last week released her latest work, the enigmatic yet accessible 9-song Geometric Universe. It’s a gripping electronic album that channels those late-night, post-bar-close parties where the morning sunrise devilishly peeks through the blinds. On “Every Night,” a murky electro-pop banger, the message is simple: “I wanna feel all the time/ So I stay up every night,” LUXI repeats.

The production infuses sheets of noise behind LUXI’s vocals, but while the sonic assault could easily act like an emotional blanket that protects against revealing too much, Geometric Universe is a surprisingly personal piece of work. “Feeling so happy even when I’m crying/ Cause I know I got you by my side,” goes the subterranean, shape-shifting track “Own World.” It’s this frank honesty throughout the album that makes Geometric Universe such a captivating and inviting listen.

MELT features LUXI, Construct, Piñata, Fortune and The Demix at Quarter’s Rock ‘n Roll Palace, 900 E. Center St., on Saturday, January 28. The show starts 10 p.m. and cover is $5.
